CLIMBERS
Invaluable plants for giving height, whether they be encouraged
to scramble up into other woody plants; such as large shrubs,
small trees, into pergolas, arbours or trained on wires to
embellish the house walls. Some smaller climbers can be grown
among perennials to provide a loose flowering effect.

ACONITUM
hemsleyanum syn: volubile
This hardy herbaceous climber has stunning blue flowers
held away from the main stems on short spurs in late August
or September. Winds its way in between other climbers so taking
hardly any space. Attractive foliage just like the perennial
kind. 8' Sun or light shade areas
ACTINIDIA
kolomikta (AGM)
Choice climber known for its attractive pink and white markings
on the leaves. Good against an open north wall or sunnier
situations. Scented small creamy flowers. 10' Deciduous.
AMPELOPSIS megalophylla foliage
climber from China.
Large shapely leaves with black berries after flowers. Hardy.
Sun or part shade. Average soil 12'+
CLEMATIS alpina
'Frances Rivis' (AGM)
One of our favourites large blue petals with an inner row of
creamy white. Decorative seed heads and second flush of flowers.
armandii 'Apple Blossom' Evergreen with the most wonderfully
scented clusters of pale pink flowers. in early spring. Sheltered
site, Sun. 15'
armandii 'Snowdrift' Same large evergreen leaves, white
flowers with many fine cut petals. Scented. 12'
cirrhosa Evergreen leaves, creamy flowers with interior
markings, in winter or early spring. Sheltered site, average
soil Sun. 12'
cirrhosa var.balearica (AGM) Similar flowers to cirrhosa
but the leaves are more finely cut, often refered to as the
"fern leaved" clematis. 12'
fasciculiflora
Silver marbled centers to the dark green leaves. Heads of whitish
green flowers. A recent introduction from China. Sheltered site,
evergreen. 12'
ladakhiana Very rare climber of moderate growth Unusual smokey
purple flowers in mid-summer. Sun or part shade.
macropetala 'Markham's Pink' (AGM) Dusky pink flowers
made up of lots of fine petals, semi-double. A useful climber
for dense green foliage covering bear stems and older tree stumps
etc. Sun, part shade. 7'
texensis 'Duchess of Albany' Long flowers which open
as they age, pleasing dusky maroon red colour. Fresh green foliage.
viticella
'Madame Julia Correvon' (AGM) Attractive rose red flowers
with reflexed petals, prune old wood in spring. Sun, roots
in shade. July.
viticella 'Purpurea Plena Elegans' (AGM) Masses of
double purple flowers, good for growing in with small trees
and large shrubs or against a wall.
HOLBOELLIA
latifolia f.coriacea
Unusual evergreen can be grown on a North wall. Tiny flowers.
occasionally followed by curious fruits. Shelter from worst
of Winter winds. 15'
HUMULUS lupulus 'Aureus' (AGM)
The climbing golden hop. Great scrambling into conifers, amongst
trees and dense shrub plantings. Herbaceous 10' or more.
JASMINUM officinale
'Argenteovariegatum' (AGM)
A truly gorgeous climber, creamy variegated leaves, splashes
of pink. White scented flowers. in summer 8-10'
x stephanense (AGM) Quite unique in that the flowers
are soft pink. Initially the leaves look variegated only to
open green 6'.
LATHYRUS latifolius
(AGM)
One of those very useful herbaceous climbers for covering sheds,
scruffy hedges etc. Best in a sunny site masses of pinky mauve
flowers in mid-summer 6' but they can get a little bigger.
LONICERA giraldii
A rare and seldom offered evergreen species suitable for even
those difficult north facing sites. Golden hairy leaves, showy
red and gold flowers. 7'+ Easily pruned.
x italica 'Harlequin' Scented flowers, in June but the
leaves are also a feature on this form. Silver and green variegation
marked pinky/red.
periclymenum 'Cream Cascade' This form has strongly scented
creamy yellow flowers. Excellent for covering fences.
similis var. delavayi Just about the largest flowered
of the hardy kinds, cream and yellow, perfumed. An evergreen
for sun or shade 12'.
LOPHOSPERMUM erubscens (AGM)
The so called "Climbing Foxglove" Large purple pink
flowers, stand out against the pale foliage. Sunny site, average
to well drained soil 4'
RHODOCHITON atrosanguineus(AGM)
Best grown as an annual so save its' seeds. Curious purple flowers.
A climber to only around 4' in one season (showy in tubs and
for trailing as well)
ROSA banksiae var banksiae (flore
plena alba)
A double pure white flower, the scent is delightful from flowers
produced in May. Sheltered site away from cold winds. 8'
banksiae 'Lutea' The most widely grown of this small
group. Masses of beautiful double yellow flowers in late spring
/ early summer make an excellent display against sunny walls.
Fragrant as well

banksiae var. normalis Very hard to find anything better
for a sunny wall, the white flowers are produced around May
and in large clusters. Scented. 12'
RUBUS fruticosus 'Variegatus'
A variegated blackberry, tough as old boots, excellent for awkward
areas and in the sun it will fruit. Creamy variegation. 5'+
lineatus Uncommon species grown for interesting foliage
with silver reverse to leaves 5' average soil sun or shade.
ulmifolius 'Bellidiflorus' Beautiful little pom poms
of pink, doubled flowers smother the previous years stems in
early summer. Sun or part shade 8'+
SCHISANDRA propinqua
var. sinensis
Sensational climber with evergreen leaves delightfully marked
silver. For a sheltered site worthy of such a find. Sun or
part shade. 1m+
SCHIZOPHRAGMA
hydrangeoides 'moonlight'
Fast growing self-clinging climber with a beautiful silvery
sheen to the foliage. Good for most sites except dark and
gloomy walls. 10' +
hydrangeoides 'Roseum' Very elegant variety with large
green foliage and pleasing rose coloured bracts. Not so fast
growing as moonlight and still quite a rare choice, sledom
offered.
SOLANUM crispum 'Glasnevin'
(AGM)
A pleasing climber from the potato family, the flowers are
a good blue in colour and contrast with the evergreen foliage.
12'-15' Sheltered site. Often confused with its' disreputable
cousin the Deadly Nightshade.
jasminoides 'Album' (AGM) Flowering later in summer
against a cloth of green foliage a very attractive evergreen
climber. Can get quite tall but good for covering walls and
growing other plants into that might need a little wind protection.
TRACHELEOSPERMUM
asiaticum (AGM)
Probably the hardiest of all species, evergreen foliage, scented
flowers. Sun or part shade, average soil 4'
jasminoides Evergreen with strong foliage and the most
amazing jasmin scented flowers grown in a site our of very cold
winter winds to best effect.
jasminoides 'Variegatum' (AGM) A good variegated form,
scented flowers. Perhaps needing a little more shelter than
the others. Sun or part shade 5'+
'Nanking' Hardy form, attractive marbled foliage, evergreen.
Perfumed flowers. Good ground cover or small climber. Sun or
part shade, situated out of "biting" winds. 5' (Plant
finder says this is asiaticum but make up your own mind when
you see it!)
