garden soils , likewise almost all the perennials will grow
well in Sun or Light Shade unless otherwise stated. They are
all lime tolerant however many will also grow happily on acid

This variety of "monks hood" has dark blue flowers

'Tinkerbell' Variegated foliage variety, only reaching

AGASTACHE 'Firebird'
This form is very aromatic and bright flowers in orange/red.
For a sunny well drained site.
ALCHEMILLA mollis (AGM)
Every garden should have this. So useful for softening edges
and gap filling. Heads of green flowers, attractive shaped
leaves
ANEMONE x hybrida 'Honorine
Jobert' (AGM)
Elegant form with single white flowers for sun or part
shade. Been around since 1858 so it must be good! 3'
pamina Pretty fine petalled double pink flower gets
to around 2' high. Sun or part shade. Excellent border perennial
for late summer.
ANGELICA archangelica
Showy reliable self-seeding biennial, A useful bit of
height to mixed plantings. Large leaves send up a magnificent
tall flowering stem.
gigas This is a much sought after monocarpic form.
Its maroon red flowers produced in umbels on tall stems in
late summer. 5'.
ANTHEMIS tinctoria 'E. C.
Buxton'
Such a reliable flowering perennial and hardy too. Masses
of lemon yellow flowers contrast with the filigree foliage.
Good on chalk for Sun. 18"
tinctoria 'Sauce Hollandaise' The flowers on this form
are as the name suggests creamy white. A little taller at
2'.
AQUILEGA
The Columbines jaunty denizens of the Fairy Dell. Applauded
loudly by all, both those kinds that co-habit with the usual
"grannies bonnet" and the more refined aristocrats,
the species, that can hold their own in the most discerning
gardeners garden ! Virtually any soil and most sites.
alpina Standing at around 18" the
flowers are a dark blue and contrast so well with the foliage
of other plants in the border.
chrysantha Shapely golden yellow flowers reaches 18"
flabellata pumila 'Alba' (AGM)The leaves are quite glaucous
giving a grey look, contrasting well with the pure white flowers.

Evergreen in the winter. The flowers are white on long arching

ASPHOLDELUS ramosus
Hardy perennial with white,. large "lily like" flowers
produced on self-supporting stems
ASTELIA
chathamica 'Silver Spear' A great "looker"
of a plant. Silver foliage remindul of a phormium interesting
flower which do have a scent and these are followed by orange
fruits. A sensation plant for sun, good soil hardy to -5º
C. Can also be grown in an open north site.
ASTER
The perennial "Michaelmas Daisies" loved by the
butterflies and by all who want the vibrancy and colour of
high summer to extend into autumn. Here we list some of the
most garden worthy forms, selected for freedom from the dreaded
mildew. Suitable for Sun or Part Shade and appreciate a soil
that is nutritious and not too dry. Trim down by half in June
to provide late flowers and reduced stature.

A splendid foliage perennial resembling a yucca. Sensational

Another "classy" plant good green foliage and chic
umbels of green yellow bracts to enhance the flowers. Gently

CAMPANULA
"The Bellflowers"
One of the most effective and versatile of garden plants,
long favoured due to their showy flowers of white, pink or
blue shades. These are freely produced, often over a long
season or intermittently throughout the summer. In form these
plants vary from compact hummocks to the tall upright stems
of the chimney bellflower. All are easy and undemanding in
cultivation the larger forms requiring a good soil. Almost
all will grow in Sun or Part Shade.

punctata 'Rubriflora' The flowers are darker, almost

punctata f. albiflora Same lovely large sized flowers
but these are pure white, hardly any marking on the interiors.
rapunculus This pretty little flowered Campanula has
violet blue flowers produced on stems up to 18" high.
Very free flowering and especially good in the autumn.
**takesimana "The Korean Bellflower" Superb
introduction. Large white bells delicately spotted red within,
produced on tall, arching with the weight, branched stems.
2' Sun or shade, any soil, except very dry. Good ground cover.
**trachelium 'Alba Flore Pleno' Double white flowered
form, rare because it cannot come reliably from seed and is
therefore slow in commercial horticulture. This form has been
exclusively propagated by tissue culture for us. Very elegant
2' Pure white flowers produced over a long time in sun or
part shade. This taxa has been in cultivation for 300 years!

blue variety. Reaching the same height as the white Sun or

Luxuriant foliage contrasts so well with the very blue flowers,
used commonly now in tubs and baskets but very good in the

**COSMOS atrosanguineus
Dark chocolate maroon flowers high above the foliage and scented
of Bournville chocolate. Best kept in pots and tubs with winter
protection unless you have a very mild and dry climate.
CRAMBE cordifolia (AGM)
The robust foliage gives little away so you will be surprised
at the immense number of small white flowers on the branching
inflorescence, a shimmering cloud. Sun. 5'
maritima Luxurious "sea kale", good for poor

DICTAMNUS albus The 'Burning
Bush' A plant famed for its combustible properties for
in high summer the aromatic vapours will ignite when lit!

**DIERAMA pulcherrimum (Angels
Fishing Rods)
Although often seen as a poolside perennial they do not like
excessively moist soil. A sunny site with rich and well drained
soil will make the plant want to flower. Slender arching stems
of dusky rose pink pendulous flowers. 4' Available in several

ECHINACEA
Perennials for sunny borders, the flowering stems rise above
the foliage to show off the large daisy like flowers, as the
petals age the centre of black stamens produce a cone, they
provide a cottagey effect to mixed plantings from mid-July
to September.
pallida Finer foliage than other forms very elegant,
mauve pink flowers. with narrower petals on 4' stems

ERYNGIUM
Quite an amazing family most with flowers enhanced by impressive
bracts, often shades of blue very metallic and showy, flowers
are borne on stems that branch near the top. Sun lovers, they
need an average to well drained soil. The American species
have very attractive foliage with linear leaves, often mimicking
Yuccas / Agave, are hardy to -12ºc. The Europeans, with
lobed cut foliage, are hardy to -15ºc

A stunning flower which can reach over 5" across, from
Mexico this variety requires full sun and well drained soils.

yuccifolium Remindful of the plants upon which its
name is derived. Toothed grey leaves and green white thimble
like flowers borne on stems 3' high
ERYSIMUM
The perennial wall flowers, they thrive in sunny sites and
on poor soils. They can be trimmed back occasionally to keep
them compact.
'Bowles' Mauve' (AGM) One of the best known forms,
glaucous grey foliage purple flowers which don't seem to know
when to stop. 2'6"
EUCOMIS
'Sparkling Burgundy'
Deservedly becoming a much sought after plant, curious flowers
give it the epithet 'pineapple plant' The whole plant suffused
with purple, sun, good well drained soil.
EUPHORBIA
Classics for town or country gardens holding their own as
individual specimens, or on a larger scale, associating well
with other garden plants, all enjoy sun, average soil and
are of easy cultivation. Wear gloves when pruning as the cut
sap can be irritating especially to the eyes."Flowers"
are really modified bracts.
amygdaloides 'Purpurea' Around 18" in height this
semi-evergreen form has rosy purple leaves which make a stunning
back cloth to the yellow flowering bracts in early spring.

characias ssp. wulfenii (AGM) This form is good in
dryer places, and will grow happily in the sunny border, where
it will reach 3' in height. Silver green foliage and lime
green "flowers."
dulcis 'Chameleon' A native of France this herbaceous
form has dark purply foliage which seems to change colour
when the sun shines on it. Attractive yellow flowers. 18"
griffithii 'Fireglow' The stems seem almost translucent
in orange/red as they part the soil in spring, orange bracts,
for the fieriest of hot effects. Herbaceous, 20"
x martinii (AGM) Evergreen form, almost a shrub with
red stems, glaucous green foliage. Lime green bracts. 2'6"
mellifera For the sunnier, sheltered and well drained
site this evergreen form has large honey coloured and scented
bracts, can get to 4', very impressive.
pithyusa Blue grey foliage, yellow flowers tidy mounds for
the front of the border. 12"
stygiana
Large foliage with the semi-mature leaves showing a distinct
hairyness to the back veins. Perhaps larger than mellifera
but still demanding a sheltered site in sun, evergreen and
gorwing from the main woody shoot so requiring that site out

FERRULA gigantea
Hardy perennial is really just a giant carrot! Sumptuous foliage

In general gentians do not like lime soils, however these
two forms are lime tolerant, they like good soils and will
grow in light shade or sun.
